

{"id":364,"date":"2024-08-21T19:26:44","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T19:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chasabasa.com\/?p=364"},"modified":"2024-08-21T19:26:44","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T19:26:44","slug":"bs-an-endangered-frog-takes-centre-stage-at-the-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chasabasa.com\/?p=364","title":{"rendered":"An endangered frog takes centre stage at the Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ecuador does not plan to intervene with the British government on behalf of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in talks over his situation as an asylee in the South American country\u2019s London embassy, Ecuador\u2019s foreign minister said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Valencia said in an interview with Reuters that Ecuador\u2019s only responsibility was looking after Assange\u2019s wellbeing, after the Australian national sued the country over new conditions placed on his asylum in the London embassy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEcuador has no responsibility to take any further steps,\u201d Valencia said. \u201cWe are not Mr. Assange\u2019s lawyers, nor are we representatives of the British government. This is a matter to be resolved between Assange and Great Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bs-quote-clearfix clearfix\">\t<blockquote  class=\"bs-quote bs-quote-13 bsq-t1 bsq-s11 bsq-center\">\n\t\t<span class=\"bsq-edge\"><\/span>\n\t\t<div class=\"quote-content\">\n\t\t\t<p>No dream is too big. Nothing we want for our future is beyond our reach. <\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"quote-author clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"quote-author-avatar\" src=\"http:\/\/demo.betterstudio.com\/publisher\/staff-post\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/12\/qoute.png\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"quote-author-name\">\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDonald Trump\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"quote-author-job\">45th U.S. President<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK\u2019s Foreign and Commonwealth Office did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment after normal business hours.Greg Barns, an Australian lawyer advising Assange, said in an email that \u201cdevelopments in the case in recent times\u201d showed the need for Australia\u2019s government to intervene to assist \u201cone of its citizens who faces real danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This position marks a departure from Ecuador\u2019s previous practice of maintaining dialogue with British authorities over Assange\u2019s situation since granting him asylum in 2012, when he took refuge in Ecuador\u2019s London Embassy after British courts ordered his extradition to Sweden to face questioning in a sexual molestation case.<\/p>\n<p>WikiLeaks, which published U.S. diplomatic and military secrets when Assange ran the operation, faces a U.S. grand jury investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Valencia said he was \u201cfrustrated\u201d by Assange\u2019s decision to file suit in an Ecuadorean court last week over new terms of his asylum, which required him to pay for medical bills and telephone calls and to clean up after his pet cat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no obligation in international agreements for Ecuador to pay for things like Mr. Assange\u2019s laundry,\u201d he said.Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno has said that asylum is not meant to be eternal, but he has expressed concern about the possibility that Assange may be extradited to the United States. Valencia said on Tuesday that he has not discussed Assange\u2019s situation with the United States\u2019 government.<\/p>\n<p>Last December, Ecuador granted Assange Ecuadorean citizenship and sought to name him as a member of the country\u2019s diplomatic mission in Britain and Russia, which could have assured him safe passage to leave the embassy.
